Statement of the President of the CCIL, Gib van Ert, regarding the attack on Ukraine
It is one of the most uncontroversial principles of modern international law that states must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of other states. Russia’s attack on Ukraine is a stark and indefensible violation of that rule.
It is reassuring to see how international law societies around the world have condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The commitment of the Canadian Council on International Law to the promotion of the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter is only strengthened by this flagrant act of aggression.
