The PKI Global Justice Journal is launching this call for submissions for an upcoming special issue examining the role and impact of the International Court of Justice on issues related to justice and accountability for mass atrocity crimes and other crimes under international law, as well as other grave and widespread human rights violations.
In recent years, cases launched at the ICJ alleging grave violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law have become more prevalent. That has included cases under the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide brought by the Gambia against Myanmar, Ukraine against Russia, and South Africa against Israel. Cases have also been brought by Ukraine against Russia under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and by Canada and the Netherlands under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Those cases are all currently pending.
Most recently, Australia, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands have indicated they intend to bring a case against Afghanistan under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Recent Advisory Opinions requested of the ICJ by the UN General Assembly have also involved significant questions related to international human rights and/or international humanitarian law, namely the case dealing with Israeli practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (for which the Advisory Opinion was issued in July 2024), and the case regarding the nature of state obligations related to climate change (for which hearings were held in December 2024).
Please note that the Journal accepts submissions of various lengths, from short snapshots of developments to longer analyses of current issues but should generally not exceed 2500 words. Please cite to open sources only in the form of embedded hyperlinks. For full submission instructions, visit the PKI website page and previous publications for stylistic guidance.
Deadline for receipt of article submissions: February 28, 2025
