The CCIL is pleased to announce that Professor Neil Craik (Balsillie School of International Affairs, University of Waterloo) has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Scholarly Book Award for his book "Liability for Environmental Harm to the Global Commons" (Cambridge University Press, 2023). The book is co-authored by Dr. Tara Davenport (National University of Singapore) and Ruth Mackenzie (Reader in International Law, University of Westminster).
The Scholarly Book Award recognizes the work of Canadian scholars of international law, and specifically scholarly books that make a substantial contribution to the international law literature.
Neil Craik is a Professor at the University of Waterloo with appointments to the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development and the Balsillie School of International Affairs, where he teaches and researches in the fields of international and Canadian environmental law. His research interests are in climate and geoengineering law and governance, deep seabed mining regulation and environmental impact assessment.

The award committee would also like to acknowledge Professor Wolfgang Alschner's book “Investment Arbitration and State-Driven Reform” (Oxford University Press, 2022) which has been selected as the runner-up.
Wolfgang Alschner is an Associate Professor at the Common Law Section with cross-appointment to the Faculty of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa. He holds the Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law. He is also a faculty member of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa and heads the uOttawa Legal Technology Lab.
